Following an investigation from consumer group Which?, Ebay and Amazon has removed dozens of carbon monoxide alarms from their marketplaces after they failed to alert of the poisonous gas.
Which? tested 7 alarms available from the online retailers Ebay and Amazon including one classed as "best seller" only to find all for failed to activate in the presence of the gas, despite all claiming to meet British Standards.
Which? has now asked the Office for product safety and standards to take a closer look at products that could pose a risk to public safety.
Carbon monoxide, the tasteless, odorless gas is responsible for around 1 death per week in the UK and over 4000 cases require medical treatment each year.
Each of the deadly alarm units were found to be cheap unbranded goods generally from the far east. There has been an increase in sales of such alarms over the last 12 months since in was made mandatory for landlords to provide in certain environments.
